What is autism?
Autism is known as a complex developmental disability that can cause hindrance with communication and social interaction. The sign and symptoms of autism usually appears before the child reaches 3 years old and this can be considered as problems or delays in various skills that needs to be developed.
What is an autism spectrum disorder?
Different individuals with this condition may have different signs of autism. Experts consider this condition as spectrum disorder or sets of disorders with different characteristics. Meaning, one person may have mild signs while other may have severe symptoms. However, they are all considered to have autism spectrum disorder.
What are the symptoms of autism?
The following are some of the chief signs of autism, which involve problems in the following area:
- Communication – children with autism have problem with verbal and non-verbal communication, wherein they may find it difficult to do speak, eye contact, pointing and smiling.
- Social – people with autism tend to have difficulty understanding other people’s feeling or thinking and sharing emotions or starting a simple conversation.
- Repetitive behaviors – these are behaviors wherein they repeat actions, words or routines.
There are several possible indications that may show that the child is autistic. One of the common signs of autism is delay in one element of development like speaking and walking, while others may be similar with autism spectrum disorders ASD. That is why, if you are suspecting that your child is autistic, consult their pediatrician right away. However, remember that not all children with slow development are considered autistic.
What are the treatments for autism?
Unfortunately, there is no drug or medication that can cure autism as well as ASD. However, there are simple ways to follow that can lessen or reduce the signs and symptoms of autism in order to help them learn.
There are several means on how you can help your autistic child to able to live a normal life even if they have this condition. Some of the common treatments options for autism spectrum disorder are behavioral therapy, speech language therapy, educational or school-based options and medication treatments. Consulting your health provider is best option to determine, which treatment they need.
