Characteristics of Autism
It is a fact for autism that no one will show common autism characteristic for each person with this condition because each has different symptoms and behavior. However, it is still very important for you to know the common characteristics of autism. This autism characteristic will help you determine the traits or behavior that can show if your child has autism. Furthermore, these symptoms are usually found in persons struggling with ADHD but in general autistic child may show the following characteristics.
Social Skills
- Incapable or less eye contact.
- Refusal to being touched or held.
- When they speaking to someone they tend to get too close
- Can respond to social dealings, but doesn’t initiate them.
- Doesn’t generally share experiences or observations with other individuals.
- Difficulty understanding figures of speech, sarcasm and jokes.
- Difficulty reading someone’s body language and facial expression.
- Cannot understand the rules of discussion.
- Difficulty interacting with group of people.
- They don’t want to be questioned by others especially if it is regarding them.
- Gives impulsive comments that have no link to the current topic and conversation.
- They give honest comments or observation but not appropriate in the situation.
- Doesn’t care about the other people’s feeling.
- Tend to be introvert, alone or over friendly.
Linguistic/language development
- Atypical use of intonation, pitch and rhythm while talking.
- Speech is oddly loud or quiet. /
- Find it hard to practice whispering
- Repeats last phrases or words repetitively.
- Usually uses incomplete and short sentences.
- May have an outstanding vocabulary.
Behaviours
- Obsessions towards ideas, desires or objects.
- Compulsive or ritualistic behavior patterns (licking, sniffing, spinning, flapping arms, rubbing clothes, sucking, tapping, humming and rocking).
- Allure with rotation.
- Play is usually cyclic.
- Numerous and assorted collections.
- Bizarre attachment or attraction to objects.
- Repeating quotes from video games or movies.
- Difficulty on moving skills from one to another.
- In the event of unusual ways they usually frustrated.
- Self-infliction especially if they are depressed or stressed.
- Frustration is expressed in unusual ways.
The above mentioned characteristics of autism may be present in the patient but not every person may have the common characteristics. So if you think that your child may have the autism characteristics, it would be best to consult the physician for a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment or therapy for the child to cope up.
